Happy Halloween

Happy Halloween Everybody!

Be safe and have a great time tonight! I’ve got a full house of kids, so there should be plenty of fun and excitement. Lots of candy, lots of pumpkins, lots of thrills… :)

Should “iSold It” be a warning to us all?

Anyone out there heard of iSold It? Basically it’s a store where you drop off your items you want to sell on eBay and the company takes pictures and lists the item for you and takes a small percentage of the profit when it’s sold.

With so many people working the eBay angle and store fronts popping up all over the place it seems like this might be a good idea.

Now, while I’m not trying to draw any parallels between iSold It and the meal assembly industry, I have to admit I do see some similarities.
– A lot of hype.
– Low entry fee.
– “Everyone needs this” mentality.
– Low startup, huge profits.
– Unproven franchise concept.
– Multiple store closings.
– Uncontrolled expansion.
– Dozens of disgruntled owners.

Again, I’m not drawing a parallel, but it does make you think. A startup company that has a meteoric rise and lands itself right in the middle of the Entrepreneur 500 hottest franchises. But then after only a year things start to crumble and one by one the business start to go under. People lose their life savings, fall massively into debt and realize there is no buyer for their franchise.

If nothing else this is a good read to perhaps remind us that if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is…

Flash in the pan? Revisited

This might be worth revisiting as there are several comments out there on whether the meal assembly is here to stay or a flash in the pan. I posted this article some time back but and several people have had their say. There are mixed feelings. Some say it is here to stay (although it will change quite a bit) to some who say it’s on the way out.

There are some points which might help with presenting the idea to customers. Several people even admit than until you try it, you just won’t get it.

I just had to show off these Halloween pumpkins.

This has nothing to do with meal assembly, but we can’t spend all our time talking about the business now can we? :) With the help of my kids I came up with these creations and thought I would show them off. Not just a traditional pumpkin carving or jack-o-lantern, these displays have a little more oomph to them. :)

They certainly light up the night and should give quite the chill to the little children who pass by. And just to answer the question, the flame shooting out the top is about 2 1/2 to 3 feet tall and they last for about 45 minutes. Yes, I take my Halloween seriously. :)

Not too much sympathy

You would think going out of business would illicit some sympathy from your customers – apparently not in this business. Here is a store announcing it’s going out of business, the session times they will still offer and the food items they still have left.

… unfortunately we are having to close. We are offering great deals this week to all of our customers! Everything in grab and go is 20% off all week long! There will be no sessions. We will continue to be open until Saturday October 20, 2007. Our hours on Saturday will be 10-4pm. Our hours during the week will be 12-6pm. The entrees that are available are the following:

Perhaps an “I’m sorry to hear that” or “You’ll be missed would be in order”, but have a read of some of these comments such as:

“I am going tonight to see what I can get. And believe you me, I’m asking for a bigger discount than 20%.”

“I now realize why they are going out of business – horrible customer service. The email I was sent was highly misleading. When I arrived at DOVER Super Suppers the freezer was practically cleaned out. I got 3 meals. I was told if I wanted more I could return tomorrow, they restock everyday at Noon. If you are going out of business and you want to get rid of things while would you do this? When asked if they would have different items the reply was “I don’t know, it’s as we find ingredients.” Do you not keep an inventory? This was the owner I was talking to. My arguments fell on deaf ears as they are closing anyway, too late to teach an old dog new tricks.”

I have no idea why this store is going out of business, but with customers like this why would you want to be in business??? Talk about kicking someone when they’re down…
